Spoon ::: Ogden Theatre ::: 04.05.10

The last couple of shows have been booked in a manner that would necessitate concert goers to show up in a timely fashion.The talent from all three bands is undeniable. For Micachu & the Shapes, the cavernous Ogden Theatre didn’t translate well for their organized chaos that they had going on stage. A smaller venue would have suited them better, but it wasn’t their fault . Often times, lead singer Levi, she would sneer instead of singing. The sneering was reminiscent of a young Billy Idol, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how much Micachu & the Shapes reminded me of a British version of Deerhoof, without the yelping of course. I wasn’t prepared for Deerhunter. I had seen them at SXSW three years ago, but it was a giant clusterfuck and they were exhausted. Last night, my face melted about two minutes into the set. The rhythm lines from the band took the best from the Pixies and the bass lines took the best from Sonic Youth. The Georgians were a bit on the jammy side, but nobody seemed to mind. The dazed crowd swayed from side to side taking in all that Bradford Cox and Co. were dishing out. I was exhausted by the end of their set. I was wore out and had nothing left for Spoon. Same situation that happened a couple of days ago when I saw Bear in Heaven. When mind blowing sets occur prior to the main attraction, there’s nothing you can do. Revel in the memory and enjoy the moment. Spoon played their hearts out, and sounded, very much like themselves on record, which is the problem. My heart was won early, but I stayed for dessert.

  1. Completely agree with this review! Deerhunter killed it! Can I ask what type of camera you use to get your shots?

  2. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
    It’s the entry camera for the SLR… I’m thinking of an upgrade to a possible 5D or 7, but we shall see…
