I love the tongue and cheek rock that the Hives bring to the table. It’s all frills and you know when you watch those guys on stage, they’re giving it their 120%. All the time. They know one speed. GO!

Oribital “Wonky”

Hamilton Leithauser is still crooning away in the latest album from the Walkmen, “Heaven,” set to be released May 29 via Fat Possum. The amount of output from one of the most durable acts in music comes in the form of seven albums in ten years. That’s almost on par with Frank Zappa or pretty damn close. The Walkmen become more refined with every album and like a good bottle of aged wine, the body of this album definitely has legs. Stream the new album via NPR over here. Look for the Walkmen to play with Florence + the Machine at Red Rocks come this July!

It really feels like disco has died. The tragic news of Donna Summers last week coupled with the latest passing of Robin Gibb has solidified the final straw that disco is dead. Many people are quick to pass judgement on a genre of music that blended dance, soul and a lifestyle that many tried to emulate during a time that was filled with unemployment, war and wait a minute, doesn’t seem like much as changed in the last couple of decades. SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER FOR LIFE!

Mick Jagger breathed some new life into SNL as the season finale’s host. The iconic Rolling Stones’ frontman brought the Foo and Arcade Fire to serve as his backing bands. I’ve been getting into the Stones over the last couple of years, dismissing them for the Beatles and the Kinks. The last couple of tours that the Stones played I felt that they were just doing it for the money. And rightfully so, however, watching Jagger do his thing last night has me mesmerized with how youthful he appears.

Beach House are pushing their latest album “Bloom” and I’ve said it before, but listening to a new Beach House album with the weather being so warm is too damn weird. The album feels like a beginning of the school year type of album.

Saturday Night Fever – Night Fever (Bee Gees)

It’s around this same time every year that I look at the movie calendar with Memorial Day coming up in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, the summer blockbuster of yesteryear was plentiful. However, due to a creative outage in Hollywood, we’re stuck with getting movie reboots and/or movie spinoffs of boardgames I use to play when I was a kid. “Battleship?” Seriously? As much eye candy as Rihanna provides, I’m not sure I could even waste $1.29 at the Redbox to see how bad that movie is waiting to suck. It’s quite possible that the movie may tread along the waters of a steaming cauldron of dog feces. I can almost guarantee that it will probably rake in the dough at the box office and a sequel will probably be in the works. The only other bright spot this summer will see will be the last Nolan “Batman” movie. I’m a little nervous about having Anne Hathaway playing Catwoman because her potential could be as bad as Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance. Wonder if Angelina Jolie was too busy?

Native sons of Chicago, California Wives, have set their sights out west. Which is great news because CW have signed with Santa Monica record label, Vagrant. In even better news, the guys are still working on their untitled debut album for release very very soon. The pending album will be their first work since their EP debut in 2010.

Well that was fast. Summer Camp could’ve rested on their laurels from their last album, “Welcome to Condale,” however, the duo have a treat for fans. The UK kids will be releasing a new EP titled, “Always,” this summer. The two wrote the material this past Christmas and wasted no time. I really HATE saying anybody “killed it” anywhere, but Hot Chip “killed it” on UK’s Jools Holland yesterday. Their forthcoming album, “In Our Heads,” will see the light of day on June 11.
