Concert bucketlist complete. This is assuming that the Smiths don’t reunite of course. New Order came to the Broomfield stage with three original members: Bernard Sumner (vocals), Gillian Gilbert (synth) and Stephen Morris (drums). As much as I enjoyed last night’s show, I felt like I was cheating on a girlfriend with the obvious absence of vital bass player, Peter Hook. Tom Chapman sat in for Hooky, turning in more than a serviceable performance, but the 1stBank Center crowd was left wondering what the iconic performance would’ve been like had the burned bridge been mended. “Elegia” pumped the venue full of beautiful anticipation awaiting for the other shoe to drop when the thunderous beat and signature New Order bass sound pelted out the 2001 heater, “Crystal.” The “Crystal” video blanketed the backdrop displaying the fictitious younger band named the Killers, which coincidentally the Killers copped in an obvious homage to the new wave heroes. The crisp sound was only amplified by the Bose type surround sound aesthetic that the 1stBank Center is known for around the city. The most welcoming piece of the evening belonged to the visuals that played for the duration of the show. Easily one of my favorite visuals for any show that I’ve ever witnessed. Absolutely stunning. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the screens for one minute in anticipation of what was coming our way.
The setlist nailed most major fan favorites and even delved into lesser known gems like “586” and “Here to Stay.” The encore consisted of three Joy Division tracks, making a total of four JD tracks making up nearly a quarter of the night’s material. I had an idea that the Ian Curtis material would be explored, just not to that extent. The next step for the UK titans is a possible new album, more touring and maybe Hooky and Bernie can share a nice tall glass of chocolate milk and settle their differences.
