Movie Review-Marie Antoinette

Sofia Coppola’s latest Period Flick was booed at Cannes this year but received a standing ovation at the end of the viewing. I went in with an open mind. I am a big fan of her work and loved her last two movies, Lost in Translation and Virgin Suicides. I listened to the Soundtrack a dozen times and I was open to the fact that Coppola decided to use New Wave music for Marie Antoinette. The music rocked in all sense of the word, but too bad the movie wasn’t as good as the Soundtrack. The movie crawled for the first hour, with very little dialogue. Jason Schwartzman was hysterical in a very subtle way. I wanted to like the movie SO much, but in the end, I was left with waiting for some type of explanation and walked away with a tub of half eaten popcorn.

  1. I think I’m with you on this one, but since I saw this way back in July, my memory may be hazy … Overall, I found it to be beautiful to look at, but ultimately empty, especially in the 45-minute-or-so stretch you could call “Birthing Rituals of the Yound and Noble”
