Parquet Courts renewed my faith in rock music this past Sunday at the Gothic Theatre in Denver. The blend of punk, jam, improv and dance culminated into a night of spiritual awakening for those of us that felt like something’s been amiss with the general state of garage rock. All of that changed when I was sucked into a vortex of moshers during the beginning set that managed to pick up anything within arm’s reach of the stage.
The exhilarating performance by Andrew Savage and crew shredded away without taking much notice of the raucous crowd into consideration to alter their plans.One minute, the guys are axing away on their guitars to a sea of fist-pumping kids. Next, Savage plays the role of maestro slowing the tempo of the evening with slower numbers as to not tire out the manic fan base.
Things finally come full circle with the dance aspect on numbers like “Wide Awake” and “Captive of the Sun” now that they’ve worked with Danger Mouse. The exposure to half of Gnarls Barkley shows with the new facet that the quartet displays proudly as a must-see live act. Usually not mentioned, but the foursome showcases masterful lengths of versatility without missing a beat with the alternating vocals of Andrew Savage and Austin Brown.
