First things first, let’s establish that Kamasi Washington is not of this planet.
The jazz musician and all-around bad-ass isn’t from this time either. Being at his show transported me to another dimension and time that didn’t seem real.
Washington and his backing band, which collectively punctuated an already perfect evening, rung in the Mission Ballroom (new Denver venue in the Swansea area, not RINO) in its second week of existence with sheer mastery.
Forget for a second that Herbie Hancock is headlining this tour, but it’s the future that captivated a mesmerized audience with a small glimpse of what music can do for hungry souls. The ethereal evening proved that jazz doesn’t have to be cheezy or relegated to the levels of “smooth jazz.”
Kamasi is currently supporting his critically 2018 album, “Heaven and Earth” out via Young Turks and has three more dates with the legendary Herbie Hancock (dates below).
