Aterciopelados brought their twenty-plus years of Colombian rock experience to the new (ish) Levitt Pavilion Sunday night with help from locals, Pink Hawks.

As openers, Pink Hawks punctuated their time strategically. Aside from playing their signature whip-smart lyrics to percussive heavy Afro-beat jams, the socially conscious act brought a political message that resonated well with the Latinx crowd: “Chinga la migra.”

Andrea Echeverri continues carrying the torch for the younger generation that wasn’t around during the thriving period of “Rock EspaƱol” as an elder in the Latinx music community. Aterciopelados cut their teeth creating a world that exists more than left of center. In that area in the musical landscape, Aterciopelados carved a niche that is best explained as a Spanish Flaming Lips with perhaps a Latin eccentricity that was on display Sunday night.

Echeverri doesn’t age. The timeless vocalist exudes a charismatic charm that blends well with longtime bandmate, Hector Buitrago. The two most recently collaborated on the 2018 release “Claroscura.” No music steam has been lost, in fact, after witnessing Aterciopelados Sunday night, I’m firmly convinced that the South Americans are in the middle of their own renaissance.
