My history with Gomez is long and tenuous. I first read about Gomez in one of the old defunct magazines where legendary blues musician John Lee Hooker was quoted as saying “I done listen to this record over and over and I can’t find no defect.” At that point, my interest piqued immediately and I gobbled up “Bring It On.” The debut album from UK’s latest Brit invasion at a time when Blur and Oasis were winding down making way for a new class of Brits.
Gomez brought their brand of roots/blues fused rock last night to a crowded house that for some, didn’t catch the rock act on the first “Bring It On” tour. Fast forward twenty years and the guys played as inspired as ever. It was just as if they were playing the rollicking material for the first time ever. Gomez may have faded in recent years, but their shredding skills never diminished. In fact, they’ve only improved since the last time I saw them at the Mile High Music Festival almost ten years ago. I’m not usually into these reunion anniversary cash grab tours, but there was something immensley sincere about last night’s affair. If anything comes out of the reunion from one of my favorite British bands is that a new album is brewing. Ian Ball and the boys compliment each other well, specifically with the vocal ranges throughout the night from barritone to tenor from three different members.
When one of them wasn’t owning the electric lead guitar, the other one was playing samples or plucking on an acoustic.
I wasn’t around for the first going of the “Bring It On” tour, but last night played even better than how I imagined it would’ve been.
