Wolf Parade proved that you can break up and bounce back stronger than before. The Canadian quartet went their seperate ways for around seven years creating side projects that never really met the following that Wolf Parade created as a unit. 2017 brought their fourth album to little fan fare with “Cry Cry Cry.” What’s most people (myself included), is that their latest batch of material is their most balanced effort that punctuates the vocal talents of co-vocalists, Spencer Krugg and Dan Boeckner.
Tuesday night had WP opening up for Japandroids in the “co-headlining” tour that displayed some of my favorite talent from north of the border. What’s heavily understated is the extensive repetoire from four albums worth of strong material with little to no filler. What the SubPop act excels at is their signature manic start stop tempo that revved up the Tuesday night crowd into a tizzy. What’s more impressive is the ease that the fourseome handled their adjustements and timing was similar to the chainsaw I took to several dry tree branches last week.
In the hour set that started off with an explosive take on “You Are a Runner and I Am My Father’s Son,” Boechkner and the boys never let up. Not once. The guys kept accelrating with each song gaining more steam starting with a plucky “Grounds for Divorce” and ending the set with an extended jam that had Krugg sweating profusely. The poor guy struggled with the thin air and barely made it to the end of the set.
Wolf Parade is currently supporting their 2017 album, “Cry Cry Cry,” and is currently on tour.
