Talk-singing is an art that not many acts are able to execute successfully; Denver fans were treated to two artists that use that vocal style superbly with a visit from Destroyer and Megabog. Indie veteran, Dan Bejar (Destroyer), brought to Denver the celebration of his latest album, “Ken.” An often overlooked album of 2017 that oozes a heavy influence from “Power, Corruption and Lies” with the melancholic tone on tracks like “In the Morning” and “Tinseltown Swimming” that incorporate a Peter Hook bass homage.
The best part is how effortlessly cool Dan Bejar appears on stage with his spiral curls that wouldn’t hold up in the dead of summer in the humid south. What people don’t talk about is the level of consistency that Destroyer releases albums that shockingly manage to up the ante with each release. Bejar has released twelve full-length albums in over twenty years. That kind of artistic output is rarely seen and not including his contributions to the New Pornographers. The level of professionalism from Destroyer is impressive starting with Bejar.
Erin Birgy (aka Mega Bog) is a guitar noodling artist that elegantly delivers a different brand of weird. Not crazy obscure, but just enough to make things interesting. Her self-deprecating humor lightened the mood during their opening set. At times, Birgy hushes Joni Mitchell type vocals, and with the pound of one drum beat, the Pacific Northwest artist flips the script with a several minute jam session with an impromptu clarinet solo. That’s just how she rolls. Mega Bog is currently starting another tour in support of their 2017 album, “Happy Together.”
