DEADMAU5 ::: RED ROCKS ::: 10.20.17

It’s easy to say that the state of EDM is at a crossroads where it’s conceivable that an artist like Deadmau5 hits play on a playlist in front of an army of mouseheads at Red Rocks and call it a night. That’s where naysayers get it wrong. Joel Thomas Zimmerman is one of the most self-aware artists in the world. He knows he isn’t re-creating the wheel. It’s what he does with the level of creativity of his live shows that catapults his stage delivery from passable to mesmerizing.

Let’s start off with the obscenely large cube midstage. That thing looks nearly like it’s about to take off and lunge into the stratosphere at hyperspeed. At second glance, the overwhelming urge to play with a Rubix Cube comes to mind.

Deadmau5 know his audience well. Almost too well. The oversized cube altar is adorned with LED visuals ranging from near meme-like images to great pop art that matches beats and tempo. Sure Zimmerman didn’t play the whole set with his signature mouse ears, but fans didn’t care. Friday night’s perfect fall night captured why it’s still possible to comfortably host a live event at Red Rocks in the fall. Even if it means that sometimes the possibility of snow is present.

Aside from the insane visuals, the Canadian producer held court with flawless ease. From the beginning of his one and half hour set, the leader of rodent nation maintaned a gripping flow from beginning to end where fans geeked out in their makeshift mouseears with fists firmly entrenched in the thin Morrison air.

In a small(ish) tour, Colorado fans should count themselves extremely fortunate for the mere reason that Dead Meow Cinco played three shows in Denver over the last week. Zimmeran is currently supporting his eighth album, “W:/2016ALBUM,” and is currently on tour that wraps up in Canada.
