The NFL for the last twenty plus years have been like a spoiled brat with daddy’s credit card in a Saks Fifth Avenue with poor taste. Media week took a turn to spectacle when MTV’s Downtown Julie Brown brought her edgy demeanor to the American pastime in anticipation for Super Bowl XXV. That same Super Bowl in 1991 was the first time the NFL went in the direction of hiring a modern act to perform at halftime.
Marching bands fulfilled the entertainment the first twenty four years, however, the sport conglomerate went in a different direction in 1991. New Kids on the Block at the peak of their stardom crushed the fans in Tampa Bay.
We can point to that year as a monumental shift in coverage and presentation by the suits representing football. Through the years, fans have been lambasted with a blitzkrieg of dynamite shows, and some less than stellar involving wardrobe malfunctions and middle fingers.
Despite their best efforts of controlling all aspects of the game, some snoozers have represented a large portion of the talent during halftime. It’s a time when people stretch their legs, potty break and refill on beverages. Commercials have now become almost as important as the main content. Although, the Bruno Mars show lit up the stage in a way that functions as the blueprint for future performers.
Coldplay is 2016’s halftime act. We almost slept through that sentence. To add insult to fans, Lady Gaga is singing the National Anthem. Let that sink in for a minute. Lady Gaga and the National Football League in the same sentence. Are we to understand that the ringleader of the little monsters at this point has been relegated to as a lounge act?
Go ahead Broncos/Panthers fans, put on your best poker faces. The Countess from television’s “American Horror” iis a renaissance woman with a classically trained voice that also happens to be a pop culture lightning rod.
When Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta isn’t cavorting with the likes of Tony Bennett or on studio lots in Hollywood, she has been known to wear meat as an article of clothing.
Is this the best we can do, NFL? Lady Gaga is an undisputed talent across the board. But, leading off the most important game and most watched sporting spectacle in the US of the year would be eaten alive by the paparazzi. The distraction isn’t needed by either team. Maybe it’s time to scale things back a little, eh?
The NFL is adamant on making every detail of the marquee matchup a highlight, but the product speaks for itself. Fans across the US stand united. All of this fluff is unnecessary.
Go Broncos!
