The SIA tradeshow comes with a lot of caché in the city of Denver. Parties galore and the biggest one of them all is the Icelantic Winter on the Rocks at the most famous outdoor amphitheater in the world, Red Rocks. Montreal electronic duo, Adventure Club, and the new supergroup of Outkast’s Big Boi with indie darlings, Phantogram, opened up the evening as Big Grams.
The trio relied heavily on Sir Luscious Left Foot’s quick improvisational skills. Beat maker Josh Carter wrangled the stage together to balance out the otherwise instrument-less stage. Big Boi’s quick with meshed with Photogram’s vocalist, Sarah Barthel, on backing vocals created the Kate Bush vibe that Chico Dusty loves so much. It wasn’t until they dropped Outkast material that things got a bit awkward. It felt forced and disingenuous.
Adventure Club played clean up for the evening as the digital bone crushers made the townies from Morrison pay for complaining about the ruckus during electronic shows. Christian Srigley & Leighton James pulverized the Red Rocks’ stage leaving no semblance of anything after a warm(ish) late January night that saw many show goers in their ski onesies. Drops were aplenty and the visuals provided a distracting (in a good way) backdrop to the two digital phenoms.
