RUN THE JEWELS

Killer Mike and El-P are making the most of their moment in the spotlight. The second eponymous album by Run the Jewels is one of hip-hop lore that has catapulted the duo into one of the fiercest acts in the game right now. Behind the pulverizing beats and bone crushing lyrics, the two have a chemistry that is seen in married couples after decades of matrimony. Fans witnessed an organic relationship where each member anticipated the next move with calculating precision without having to look at one another to make the next move.

The Mass Appeal artists hit the stage with the force of a charging rhino in an open field. Their beats attacked the audience like a sound wave tsunami with zero notice leaving everybody to take cover. But they didn’t. Fans lifted their hands in unison with a sea of snapback hats bobbing to the sound of “Blockbuster Night Part I.”

What sets the two apart from their contemporaries are the supreme use of street smart rhymes intermingled with a keen awareness of a combination of pop culture and social issues. The two are hustling their most recent release, “Meow the Jewels,” and will be making their last US appearance this year tonight in Michigan.
