Much can be said about a person when faced upon great adversity. Try hitting the stage in front of a crowd of thousands, only to have the sound go out mid song. Lead singer, Lauren Mayberry, took the setback with grace and poise. Many would appear flustered at the very least. The Scottish lead singer took the audio pitfall and turned it into an opportunity to display her charming charisma that won the crowd over within the first five minutes of last night’s show. Despite the technical difficulties, a smooth transition by the three eased the tightly packed crowd into a screeching frenzy.
It’s easy to point out obvious nods to previous synth lords, Yaz/Depeche Mode to name a few. However, the strong lead vocal presence wasn’t the centerpiece of those acts. Mayberry owns the stage. An unstoppable tour de force that isn’t too pushy nor preachy, but a refreshing confidence that has a blue collar tinge that isn’t afraid to get dirty. The trio exude a curious innocence that best matches a wide eyed open first time approach, despite making the tour rounds the last several years. Last night’s fever pitch hit maximum pique level in the crushing take of “Never Ending Circles.” CHVRCHES are supporting their sophomore album, “Every Open Eye,” released September 25.
