Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz has the energy of an Olympic athlete doped up on the highest grade of PEDs (performance enhancing drugs). Thursday night unraveled like a bar band gone awry with all the right kinds of chops from gypsy maniacs, Gogol Bordello, in full support of ATO Records’ latest album release, “Pura Vida Conspiracy.” The nucleus of GB revolves around Hütz and Sergey Ryabtsev with some new faces to round out the rest of the rambunctious lot of accordion and violin loving comrades. The short set hit a fever pitch with “Dig Deep Enough” that would’ve sounded perfect with a bunch of soccer hooligans embracing each other whilst curling pints of Carlsberg with reckless abandon before closing time.
Josh Homme proved that there’s more to Queens of the Stone Age than his bruising forearms and hulkish demeanor. The illustrations from Boneface set the mood perfectly as QOTSA crushed a brooding take on “Keep Your Eyes Peeled.” Aside from the small chit chat from Homme, the guys were in Morrison to dominate the Red Rocks stage. The guys would’ve been better suited playing behind chicken wire with their brand of ominous rock and bone crushing tendencies. The new album, “Like….Clockwork,” is out via Matador and could possibly be the best vinyl purchase you could make this month.
