I’ve never witnessed a show where the vocalist in question was SO in to his/her art that it kind of spooked me. Chan Marshall channeled a different level as she started off her much anticipated return to Denver getting the giant monkey off of her back performing “the Greatest.” As the crowd waited 30 minutes in anticipation, I must have heard at least on three separate occasions, “if she plays the Greatest, I’m going to die.” The pristine sound complimented the not so intrusive backdrop of different sceneries taken from different videos. After more than fifteen years on the grind, the music is woven into Marshall’s DNA that it’s quite possible that it has consumed her being which could be possible for her health/financial woes. At any rate, her art has churned out a stunner of an album with “Sun,” and the live rendition of “Sun” captured the angst and emotion not felt on the Matador release.
