Interpol fans should probably come to grips that there might not be a new album from the holders of doom and gloom out in Gotham City. I lamented that we hadn’t seen nor heard any rumors of any new material, but after last night, Paul Banks put my worries to ease. Mr. Skyscraper is playing as a relentless mercenary with his band of not so merry men. All of the guys took fashion tips from Johnny Cash’s stylist with the black on black outfits for all them sinners out there. The eponymous album from Banks available via Matador is a more intimate affair that reaches the inner soul that Julian Plenti failed to reach. Last night’s performance saw zero Interpol covers and a set from both of Banks’ solo albums, starting early with “Fun That We Have,” allowing for the guys to puff their collective chests early and often. I like the direction on some of the live cuts from last night. Banks hit his stride while noodling and improvising with different takes of Things could be a lot worse. If all else fails, Banks still has Helena Christensen to kiss goodnight.
