The XX // John Talabot ::: Boulder Theater ::: 10.17.12

After multiple US tours, the XX made their Colorado debut in the Republic of Boulder. The moody UK dwellers of gloom came to town promoting their second full length album, “Coexist.” The sold out crowd were treated to the sounds of 2:54 and Spanish producer/DJ, John Talabot to get the blood flowing. Fresh off of his banging Larimer Lounge performance earlier this month, John Talabot amplified his game for the larger venue pumping the air with his calculated brand of electronic music. “Oro y Sangre” crushed the crowd into a dance frenzy. I guess as much as possible while still maintaining that “too cool for school” demeanor.

The XX wasted no time delving into the new album performing “Angels” as their set starter. The second album is grand and all, but the neglected Colorado crowd was visibly there for the stunning debut album, “xx,” that soundtracked much of everybody’s listening rotation of 2009. Romy’s vocals took on a more intense level of affliction which I didn’t think was possible. Jamie xx did his part of holding the trio together and often times sending the crowd into a wave of convulsions with the overwhelming barrage of bass that suffocated the 420 scented air. Despite hearing negative reviews about the XX’s live performance lacking substance, the trio delivered on the highly anticipated show with a business like mentality leaving zero room for error.
