Chavela Vargas 1919-2012
The world lost a great one this week with the passing of Mexican singer and lover of life, Chavela Vargas. Vargas grew up in a time where men were the only kind strumming guitars. Chavela found a co-conspirator in the legendary José Alfredo Jiménez. to realize her dream. Her voracity for life had her linked with Frida Kahlo, but it was her distinct vocal style that resembled a rose adorned with many thorns that won fans over. The famed artist’s career spanned over fifty years with gobs of albums and tours that spanned the globe. A true inspiration for young women everywhere. Now trying listening to any of Vargas’ music without reaching for your closest bottle of Tequila.
