the Weekender ::: London 2012 Olympics

The Olympics reigned as king of the weekend for those of us unable to be present in London. Lots of armchair quarterbacks talking about Danny Boyle’s stab at the Olympic ceremonies titled “Isles of Wonder.” The masterful Boyle successfully created a relevant production that most citizens of the UK would be proud of calling Boyle, one of their “own.” Boyle comes from humble beginnings and his thematic masterpiece wove the different periods of English history with mesmerizing attention to detail and more than generous with the eye candy pulling out all the stops to make the Beijing opening ceremonies look like arts and crafts hour at a local elementary school. Underworld held their musical portion of the evening well under control creating shifts in tempo gracefully. Most viewers will talk about James Bond and the Queen of England jumping from a helicopter or Becks arriving via speed boat, and that’s all fine and well. However, the prize of the night belonged to the jaunt in English music contribution through the years that included obvious nods from the Who to Dizzee Rascal.

Live performances included an uninspired cover of “Come Together” by the Arctic Monkeys, Alex Trimble of Two Door Cinema Club and Sir Paul McCartney repping the Beatles. Trimble handled vocals on the feathery Underworld written track, “Caliban’s Dream.” Don’t miss TDCC on tour with their forthcoming album, “Beacon,” scheduled for release September 4 and the Olympic music, “Isles of Wonder,” is available over here.
