CULTS ::: Larimer Lounge ::: 08.01.01he

Monday night played like a time warp from the late 60’s with the throwback sweat/sun soaked jams from CULTS, Guards and Writer. Writer sizzled the stage early with material from their future LP, “BROTHERFACE,” scheduled to be out this fall. Guards took almost 45 minutes in soundcheck. By the time they hit the stage, the crowd grew pretty restless due to the lack of circulation in the steamy space. All (well, maybe some) was forgiven when Guards captured the eyes and ears of
the onlookers that had nearly melted away as they played their psych-pop interpretation of a time when Eric Burdon and the Animals were top billing. CULTS wasted no time in getting the audience to under their spell, starting the night out with “Abducted.” The hip swayin’ melodies played well off of the dueling vocals of Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin. My only quip is how short their set was, but I guess there’s nothing that you can do when you only have limited material to perform.
