Dum Dum Girls ::: Hi-Dive ::: 02.21.11

Monday night brought out a sea of lo-fi madness and melancholy as Dum Dum Girls, Minks, and Dirty Beaches played to a packed Hi-Dive.Dirty Beaches may have come to join us in 2011 via his time capsule from the 60’s where men always kept a comb handy in their back pocket and greased their hair with Royal Crown. The nostalgic loops provided ample backing for Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches,on a lonely stage where he vivaciously crooned with a Elvis inspired swagger. His music could’ve found strong placement in David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart.” Good news for everybody because we can expect a full length LP coming soon (March 2011 on Zoo Music). Minks played their brand of moody tunes for a rainy Saturday. Unfortunately, they all started to blend together after a while and the luster of their album “By the Hedge” wore off a bit. Dum Dum Girls started their set off with their cover of Rolling Stones classic, “Play with Fire.” The girls were all business on stage and flexed plenty of muscle to prove that they aren’t just another lo-fi fade out. The two part harmonies of Jules and Dee-Dee complimented each other very well; creating a gorgeous howl backed up by Sandy feverishly manning her drum-kit. Look for the girls to release their EP, “He Gets Me High,” via Sub Pop March 1st. The EP includes a fantastic cover of the Smiths’ classic,”There is a Light That Never Goes Out.”
