HOW TO RUN A PA FOR A DIY SPACE // 12-2:30pm at GLOB // Cost: donation
Learn how to run a live PA system and mixer for live music events. This demo will cover basic technical
aspects of running a PA to properly deliver the sound of music (or noise) at a DIY Space, including how to
GERMAINE BACA developed a deep appreciation for sound and music at an early age growing up in a family of
accomplished musicians, including parents who perform in mariachi bands. She has taught guitar and drums at The Rock
and Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, currently works as an Audio/Visual contractor and is a member of I.A.T.S.E. local 28
and 7. Germaine plays drums and has toured with Rainbow Sugar, Josh Taylor’s Friends Forever, Old Time Religion (K
Records) and Sin Desires Marie, who have recently reunited and are planning a reunion show this fall in Denver.
VALERIE FRANZ got her start in sound engineering on an 8-channel mixer in a high school performance class. Soon
after that she found herself running sound at the popular Denver nightclub, Rock Island, soon followed by a stint at
the Marquis Theater. Inspired by the local underground music community, she and band mate Bree Davis started the
cassette label, Teen Pass Out. She currently performs in Night of Joy, Slight Harp and Last Eyes and is a member of
the TITWRENCH Fest planning crew. As lead guitarist and vocalist for NOJ, she recently returned from an east coast
tour with local artists Hideous Men. She will be taking her solo project, Last Eyes, on tour with Psychic Handbook this
TODD NOVASAD is from Denver, Colorado. He builds homemade electronics and acoustic objects to sculpt sound
influenced by space exploration and new horizons under the name Novasak. The sonic output being both quiet and loud
becomes a wide-open sound space falling from harsh electro-acoustic noise to abstract ambient, always tripping between
these genre definitions. He is the head behind the recording label Swamp Of Pus Quality Media, and is partner/organizer
LIVE ONLINE MUSIC COLLABORATION // 3:00-5:30pm at GLOB // Cost: donation
Hands-on workshop for real time online music collaboration techniques. Participants will be invited to
play in a set with immediately following the workshop to kick off the evening’s musical performances.
SYNTHIA PAYNE is an award-winning scholar and artist from Los Angeles, California. Her pioneering live internet music
shows occur on a global scale – literally musicians from all over the world playing together in real time. Synthia received
an MFA from UC Santa Cruz’ Digital Arts and New Media. Earlier this year, she was technical director for telematic
concert at the ATLAS theatre between CU Boulder’s Jazz Studies onsite, NYU’s Steinhardt School, and Korea’s KAIST.
BUILD YOUR OWN CONTACT MICROPHONE//12-2pm at Rhinoceropolis//Cost:$10.00(incl. material)
Learn how to make a basic contact mic that will open your ears to a new world of sound. These homemade
mics give you the ability to amplify acoustic instruments or any strange, noisy object (sky’s the limit) by
plugging it into a mixer or directly through your amp. You will leave this workshop with the knowledge of how
to make more at home as well as techniques to waterproof your mic so that you can record sounds submerged
MARISA DEMARCO and GENA LAWSON are from Albuquerque, NM and perform in several bands including Milch de la
Maquina (performing at Titwrench). They use experimental sounds and like to derive music from items other than musical
instruments. For this they have learned how to make effective and cheap contact mics. In their non-musical lives, if there
is such a thing, Gena teaches high school English and Marisa is the news editor for the Alibi (an Albuquerque magazine).
BUILD YOUR OWN FM TRANSISTOR RADIO // 2-5pm at Rhinoceropolis // Cost: $25.00 (incl. materia)
Learn how to build your own FM transistor radio to broadcast a pirate signal that others can tune into within
a close range. The ability to freely broadcast and tune into radio transmissions has been one of the most
fundamental forms of communication technologies throughout history and still remains as a valuable tool for
AUTUMN CHACON is a self-taught circuits hobbyist from Albuquerque, NM who enjoys tinkering in the fields of
electromagnetic spectrums. Her interest in radios (and other lo-fi technologies) is rooted in her interest in preserving a
human connection in media. With fellow collaborators, she has built and used multiple radio transmitters to broadcast
and tune in the sound for various films for drive in movie events. Autumn will be joining Titwrench after her recent trip
to the Allied Media Conference in Detroit, where she conducted a workshop on the importance of traditional forms of
communication in a society increasingly reliant on centralized mass media.
