The Henry Clay People made a return to Denver as tour openers for
Against Me! and Silversun Pickups to promote their recently released
album, “Somewhere on the Golden Coast”, which debuted on June 8th via
TBD Records. The group served as a great opener, charging the crowd
not only with their drunken anecdotes, but also with a diversified set
list that created a crescendo of energy. Their capricious sound leads
the listener in, wondering where the band will go next, from the
youthful punk sounds of “Slow Burn” to the heartfelt and catchy “Keep
Your Eyes Closed”, and the slower, more relaxed rock of “This Ain’t a
Scene”. The LA group has a varied following of fans, likely due in
large to the eclectic styling of their songs, all of which display an
exuberance of apathy for the commons of the everyday. Their songs
provide lyrics that resonate with their audience, finding commonality
in working to make ends meet and struggling to get ahead. Although
their classic-rock-meets-indie-rock sound gives light to their disdain
towards the struggles of the music scene, the controlled wildness of
their sound separates The Henry Clay People from the crowd of cynical
and rebellious teen angst bands, placing them in a more mature but
still youthful class of their own.
After a cancelled appearance with Muse in April due to weather, Denver
fans were eager to see the Silversun Pickups perform songs off of
their most recent album, Swoon, released April 14, 2009 via Dangerbird
Records. As the headliners of their current tour, the LA band
performed with such a dynamic energy that it was hard for the crowd to
not be drawn in to the fiery vocals, heavy guitar riffs, vicious bass
lines, and visually intoxicating light display. The Silversun Pickups
kept true to their Silver Lake indie-alt-rock roots and kept the show
intimate yet explosive, from “Panic Switch”, the first single off of
Swoon, to “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles” from their first
full-length album, “Carnavas”. With their passionate lyrics and
thunderous sound, Silversun Pickups performed memorable show that left
the senses reeling and the crowd yearning for more. – Jennifer Gibbs
