Vampire Weekend ::: Ogden Theatre ::: 03.19.10

The NYC quartet played to a shoulder-to-shoulder , sold-out crowd this past Friday night at the Ogden Theatre. It seems whenever they come to town, they bring a blizzard with them, making it close to impossible to leave the warm confines of my cozy abode. The large crowd was handsomely rewarded for making the hard decision of bundling up in five layers and maneuvering through the treacherous streets of Denver. The Blow opened up in a very awkward bit that turned from bad to awful in a few short songs. I had seen her before at CMJ years ago, and remember her to be rather endearing, but her shtick became a bit cumbersome after her ill fated attempts at being “cute” were shot down by the no BS taking crowd. Vampire Weekend’s prep rock alleviated any emotional duress that was caused by the Blow with their songs about school girl crushes and one of my favorite Mexican beverages, “Horchata”. The new tunes off of “Contra” are noticeably influenced by their recording sessions they had in Mexico City at Molotov’s studios. A triumphant return for the NYC elite capped off by an encore solidified a well-rounded show that consisted of their two album repertoire and some snazzy dance moves by lead man, Ezra Koenig.
