New York, NY, March 16, 2010 – Starting today, fans of the seminal indie bands Broken Social Scene and Metric will be asked to cast their votes and elect the winner of the Pepsi Refresh SXSW Challenge at the annual SXSW Music and Film Conference in Austin, TX. Both bands have developed Pepsi Refresh Project ideas and the band that receives the most votes will be awarded a $100,000 grant to bring their idea to life.

During the music and film festival, which runs from March 17 through the 21 in Austin, TX, fans will be able to cast votes for their favorite artist and their idea at voting stations onsite. Placed strategically around the SXSW Music and Media conference, the voting stations will offer more information about the Pepsi Refresh Project and explain how people can get involved. Votes can also be submitted at the Pepsi Refresh SXSW Challenge’s media partner Spin.com at Spin.com/PepsiRefresh or via text to ‘P-E-P-S-I’.

The Pepsi Refresh Project (http://www.refresheverything.com), a groundbreaking effort to foster innovation in social good, will award more than $20 million this year to fund great ideas that refresh the world. The program launched on January 13 and has already exceeded expectations by receiving the monthly limit of 1,000 submissions in less than 24 hours during the last two submission windows.

Broken Social Scene’s Pepsi Refresh idea is to support Street Kids International’s Street Works initiative, which seeks to empower street kids to develop safe and productive ways to earn a living. “We’re empowering people of all ages to bring their new and innovative ideas to life through the Pepsi Refresh Project,” said Ralph Santana, VP of marketing, Pepsi-Cola North America Beverages. “Every year, SXSW becomes a hub of creativity for musicians and it’s the perfect event for music fans to support an idea and a program that is close to the artists they love.”
