Mexico isn’t one of those Spanish speaking countries where they use “vos” to each other. I know this is making lots of you that took Spanish way back in high school for a time warp, but it’s a funny thing when you’ve spoken Spanish all of your life and have to use “vos” in a different country, i.e. Spain or Argentina. I started conjugating all the Spanish bad words in the “vosotros” tense to piss of a friend that hates the fact that Mexicans use “güey”, like Americans use “dude”. BTW, “güey”, literally translates as “ox”, but can be interpreted in many different ways. I love that the Tribute to Los Fabulosos Cadillacs is titled “Vos Sabes” (out March 2nd via Nacional Records and available for sale here). Everything comes full circle and a band as transcendent as Los Fabulosos Cadillacs is deserving of such a valiant effort from all parties involved. Sometimes tribute albums get overindulgent and get driven down the wrong road and end up having some random band that has no business being on the list of contributors. This tasteful tribute album has done right by LFC and has contributions from most of the Spanish speaking countries south of the Rio Grande. Los Amigos Invisibles contribute a version of “Mal Bicho” that is unfathomably funkier than the original, possibly better than the original, and worth the price of admission if it were only for that one track. LFC came into the Rock en Español scene where there wasn’t much going on and took the best from what was going on in South America and meshed it with the Clash to create this hybrid of reggae, salsa, mambo, cumbia, and rock.
