Girls ::: Bluebird Theatre ::: 02.10.10

Sometimes you have to be a bit leery about triple bills that are stacked from top to bottom.Will the undercard outshine the main bill? Will the two openers be time suckers? To quote Meatloaf, “two out of three, ain’t bad”. Girls proved that their hulking guitars couldn’t overpower the unmistakable voice of Christopher Owens. Girls recorded isn’t the same as Girls live. I maybe overstating the obvious , but bands have a tendency not to deviate too far from their recorded material. Girls took their material to a different level. Owens has a signature move. Pete Townshend has the “Windmill”, Dave Lee Roth has the “scissor-kick”, and Owens has “the flamingo”. The entire set, Owens would put one leg on his knee like a flamingo. I truly believe that’s how he taps into his energy/creative juices. See the video below if you don’t believe me. The Smith Westerns complimented Girls quite well . Their unpolished exuberance displayed their potentia . I’m convinced that the best is yet to come and the youngsters shredded through their short set leaving the crowd chanting for more.. The Magic Kids weren’t my thing. A bit too whiny and over the top for my tastes.
