Last night I sent one of the original club kids from the Denver scene, Chuckie Martinez, to take in one of the best UK exports and a rare Denver performance.
Simian Mobile Disco’s forward driving bio-rhythms rocked the Ogden Theater in Denver this Thursday night. Half the group that local enthusiasts expected to see, James Ford and James Anthony, performed another glorified DJ set.
Though they delivered clean, polished beats, smooth base lines with flawless transitions, I was disappointed that I did not see the whole crew performing on synths and vocals. As a fan, I understand that electronic performances are hard to reinterpret into a live format but we are ready and longing to see left-field performances. Although DJ sets can be effective, I feel the electronic music subculture is overrun with too much of it. As a scene, Denver should not be underestimated. People are ready to see artists actually perform.

FYI, Simian Mobile Disco only has 2 members. Their earlier “band” incarnation Simian had four members, but broke up back in 2005.

Yep, sorry chuckie, but SMD are just two guys, and their music is dj orientated. Just because there are vocals in the music, doesn’t mean that they will have all their guests with them for their gigs, otherwise they would be broke!
