Mile High Music Festival Day 1 in Review

The Delta Spirit ::: Mile High Music Festival Day 2
The Delta Spirit

The first day was noticeably fuller in terms of audience attendance. The scene was flooded with a sea of black/white Tool shirts. Does that violate concert going rule of, “Thou shall not adorn thyself in the same concert shirt as the band”?

I’m further convinced that Matt Nathanson isn’t as big as he should be. The talented singer-songwriter from the Bay Area is so much more. He has an amazing knack for story telling and his stage presence breathes an aesthetic not possessed by many singer-songwriters that aren’t as animated on stage.  The Duke Spirit played a rocking set that was fueled by a packed tent, manic vocals, and an insatiable appetite for rollicking guitars. Gomez played an extra loud set, and I forgot that they use to incorporate samples into their music, with their set opener, Revolutionary Kind. Ani Difranco’s inspiring folk songs of love, passion, scorn, and reality made a mostly female crowd swoon several times. Local heroes, Big Head and the Monsters , came crashing onto the East Stage with their thunderous anthems of new and old. It was refreshing to see Todd Park Mohr hadn’t lost any of his guitar grit. Incubus provided hits from the FM dial, with a Prince cover of “Let’s Go Crazy” that was headscatchingly amusing. The highlight of the day came when the duo from Akron, the Black Keys, trampled a rather large stage to smithereens. The thunderous drums and blues drenched guitar chops had the crowd worked up and sweating overtime. The second coming of Ben Harper with his new band, the Relentless 7 played hard, but not with much soul. I was a bit disappointed, although, they did play a Led Zeppelin cover that suited them well. I didn’t stick around for Tool (yes, blasphemy, but I’ve never been a Tool fan, and I wasn’t one of the selected few to shoot the group for one song in minimal lighting).

  1. WOW! Ok, here we go.. First of all, headscatchingly?? is that really a word? I looked it up all over the net, doesn’t seem to exist. Perhaps you should check your spelling and grammar (“isn’t as big as he should.” … be)
Second, how could you not support Tool, whom played quite an amazing set by the way. I respect others and their right to freedom of expression and speech and so on. But, when people express their feelings online they should expect recourse if they haven’t gotten the whole picture or double checked their statement before publishing. Sorry, no offense. Hope you had a fabulous time as well!

  2. I think it’s great that you love Tool, and that you had a great time. You shouldn’t take it as a personal attack that I didn’t stick around for their set. Thank you for pointing out my grammatical errors. The nice part about writing your own blog is that you have the creativity to put together certain words. Thanks for stopping by.
