New Mars Volta
The news of a forthcoming Mars Volta album, has me a bit squeamish because I don’t know if it will be Frances the Mute type material or if it will be some Bedlam in Goliath material. Hopefully the former, because the more the band progresses, the less I understand. Cedric and Omar, please forgive my ignorance. There’s two Youtube stream’s below, one of a new track from their forthcoming album, Octahedron Leak (June 23rd release date), and the other is a demo.

Twist & Shout is very please to announce a free in-store performance by Steve Earle on Friday, May 15 at 6 p.m., in celebration of his upcoming album Townes (to be released 5/12). Fans can pre-purchase Townes at Twist & Shout and get a poster as well as a wristband that will guarantee entry into this exclusive event. KBCO will be here to broadcast the event live on the air.
Steve Earle’s new album Townes, is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy Award winning album Washington Square Serenade. The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle’s friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. The songs selected for Townes were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to. Some of the selections chosen were songs that Earle has played his entire career (“Pancho and Lefty,” “Lungs,” “White Freightliner Blues”). He learned the song “(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria” directly from Van Zandt, and taught himself “Marie and Rake” specifically for making this record. Earle recorded the New York sessions solo and then added the other instruments later on in order to preserve the spirit of Van Zandt’s original solo performances to the best of his recollection. The track “Lungs” was produced and mixed by Dust Brothers’ John King and features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine/The Nightwatchman on electric guitar. The album also features Earle’s wife Allison Moorer. Townes will also be available as a deluxe 2-CD set as well as double Limited Edition 180 gram vinyl.

This is a steal! Amazon has the latest album from Great Lake Swimmers at $2.99. Go here to pick it up! Lost Channels embodies my favorite aspects of what I would like to call a “Road Trip Album”. It’s one that you can put on, not feel like you’re at the club/bar, great melodies, excellent songwriting, reminds you that you’re out in the sticks, and it is one my favorite releases of the year.

The Kills may be the last real rock n’ roll band left in existence, with proof lying in their Wednesday night performance at the Fox Theater in Boulder that ended with singer/guitarist/sex pot Allison Mosshart being carted off the hospital. Denver blog, Merry Swankster, reported Mosshart suffered from a cold and altitude sickness and is doing just fine.
The duo’s onstage one-foot-in-the-bedroom flirting barreled the audience over with brute force, a Midnight Boom-heavy set giving us tracks like “URA Fever,” “Kissy Kissy,” and “Cheap and Cheerful.” Mosshart prowled the empty space, dragging the mic stand about as her scary and gorgeous voice spilled out perfectly between erratic fits of coughing and smoking. The best description of her behavior during the short 30-minutes of show came from my friend Alex, who said Mosshart was like “a cross between Joan Jett and a wild, chain-smoking stallion.” Indeed.
I couldn’t help but feel a little ripped off by The Kills dwarfed set, but they still sounded filthy, beat heavy, alcohol saturated, and drug addled, Hince playing the perfect anchor to Mosshart’s volatile and delightful vocal conduct.
In truth, Mosshart should maybe consider stopping the drinking or the drugs or the smoking, or at least come up with something better than “altitude sickness” cover-up. Because I call bullshit on this one. Booze, coke and smokes was more likely the culprit, girlfriend.
