Terrorbird @ CMJ
I’m already jealous, but fuck. Seriously, the more I see these lineups, the more I wish I could be making my way out to the city.

Music marketing connoisseurs, Terrorbird Media, announce their third annual daytime CMJ Blowout, this time taking place at Cake Shop on Wednesday, October 22nd from noon to 6:15pm. Featuring the likes of School of Seven Bells, Marnie Stern, Tobacco, Women, Shugo Tokumaru, and more, as well as a handful of djs that features a special dj set from Shout Out Out Out, this will surely be THE place to be on Wednesday afternoon. Sponsored by XLR8R magazine, the party is 18+, and early birds will be treated to free cupcakes — plus, the party will feature a FREE Sparks Power Hour. ***No RSVPs but come early to ensure entry.***
Performers for the event include, in order of appearance:
Frontier Ruckus (Quite Scientific) – This Ann Arbor, MI sextet mixes banjo, acoustic guitars, horns, and drums float around each other to create a possessed spirit that mirrors lead songwriter Matthew Milia’s introspective, story telling style.
Rainbow Arabia (Tiny Man/Manimal Vinyl) – It’s no wonder that LA’s Rainbow Arabia has already sparked the interest of the international taste-maker scene as well as major label interest–they mix eastern percussion, addictive rhythms, and female vocals for something that could be described as a more “out there” take on M.I.A.
Starfucker (Badman) – WIth many referring to Starfucker as the “next Of Montreal,’ this much buzzed about Portland band that mixes pop and a myriad of influences. “A fine piece of fractured, homemade pop, with handclaps, bleary synths, drum machines, clunky acoustic guitars, and honeyed lo-fi harmonies.” – Pitchfork.
Shugo Tokumaru (Startime International/Almost Gold) – Japan’s Shugo Tokumaru dropped international jaws when he played shows with with Deerhoof only months ago, bringing his kaleidoscopic mix of pop, folk, and off-kilter newness to audiences fascinated with his addictive & wide-eyed musical grab bag.
Faunts (Friendly Fire) – Making a huge real world ripple with their music being featured in the smash hit video game ‘Mass Effect,’ Edmonton, Canada’s Faunts offer up dizzying, epic walls of fuzz and sound, along with subtle hints of 80’s new wave flavor and electronics. Fans of M83 take note.
Tobacco (Anticon) – As a member of popular psych rock outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tobacco has built one of the most devoted and intriguing followings this side of Animal Collective. His solo record explores similar themes, only putting his signature touch on swirling, mind expanding electronic opuses.
Women (Jagjaguwar) – With their debut recorded in Sub Pop Chad Vangaalen’s basement, Jagjaguwar’s Women somehow channels Lou Reed’s ‘Transformer,’ the Zombies, and Herman’s Hermits into a cornucopia of pure bliss–unlike anything you’ve heard before, yet adrenaline pumping and accessible to all.
Takka Takka (Ernest Jenning) – With their newest full length ‘Migration’ being produced by Sean Greenhalgh of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the band creates songs full of guitar swells, multitracked vocals and artful writing reminiscent of David Byrne with the seething sophistication of later Fugazi. The NYC buzz is big, and there’s a reason why.
Marnie Stern (Kill Rock Stars) – With influences including Sleater-Kinney, Hella, Boredoms, Melt Banana and Don Caballero, NYC’s queen of shredding is back. More confident and creative than ever, her sophomore album manages to be simultaneously badass and adorable with her jaw-dropping vocals and stunning guitar-work.
School of Seven Bells (Ghostly International) – From the remnants of indie powerhouses The Secret Machines and On! Air! Library!, SVIIB finally unleashes their infectious brand of dreamy shoegaze and propulsive dream pop into one of 2008’s best records of the year.
The DJ lineup for the party is: Shout Out Out Out (DJ Set), Jeff Owens (Ghostly), Leo (Creaked), Mona (Sub Pop), and Jay (French Miami).
