1930-2008
I grew up in El Paso and the Bear was a permanent fixture. Don Haskins was the coach of the Texas Western/UTEP men’s basketball team and it is because of him that the face of sports would forever change after his 1966 team went on to defeat a heavily favored U. of Kentucky team in the NCAA Tournament. The Bear was one of a few sports figures we had in town to look up to in aside from Tim Hardaway, Tiny Archibald, and Lee Trevino. The El Paso Times has more info here. Don Haskins was 78.
El Paso is in morning right now, especially UTEP. He deserves our remembrance. R.I.P
