Pacific UV

Their new album, Longplay2 which was released Feb. 19th via WARM records, plays like a beautiful procession (from what I’ve heard). The best description comes from the band themselves, …with words creating a mood akin to the ambient shadow of a Lee Friedlander photograph or the dripping Southern Gothic intuition of a Tennesse Williams script. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Glass Menagerie. You can purchase the album here.

Sun Kil Moon

April is the name of the new album from Mark Kozelek set to be released April 1st. Coincidence?! Sun Kil Moon=Red House Painters and Red House Painters=Sun Kil Moon. I am grateful for Mark Kozelek. His music got me through a part of my life that saw itself in a dark tunnel. Winter is bad enough on the body and soul. I listened to anything Mark Kozelek or Josh Rouse. When I hear the music of Sun Kil Moon, it takes me back to when I hated love and reflected on life from the end of an empty bottle and countless cigarettes in an ashtray piled as high as a New Jersey landfill. This album conjures some of his best works and I don’t think I could have handled another album stacked with covers. Don’t get me wrong, his take on Tiny Cities Made of Ashes still makes me cry, but his public demands more out of him and the group. The forthcoming album, April, has Will Oldham , Ben Gibbard, and Eric Pollard lending their vocals to the album. Buy here.

Silver Jews

David Berman’s spoken word music aesthetic is not an easy pill to swallow. He’s one of those artists where you’ll find people either hate him or love him. I was turned on to his music by his association w/Stephen Malkmus. It was brought to my attention that Malkmus only shows up on every other album, so we’ll have to wait till the next Silver Jews release. The new album, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, will be released June 17th via Drag City. If you’ve ever read any of David Berman’s books, add a guitar, and some vocals and you have yourself some Silver Jews. The addition of Berman’s wife Cassie on vocal duties is genius!
