Animal Collective
Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom

I’m just going to throw this out there right now. I don’t like shows at Cervantes. The ever present stench of Patchouli hoovers around the room like jock itch in a gym lockeroom. That said, the Animal Collective played a staggering set where they displayed much anticipated material from the upcoming album, Strawberry Jam. The vocals were heavy on the reverb, the digital samples were flowing freely, and the whole lot of kids were burning trees left and right. I had no idea that these guys had this kind of following. It was a bit foreign to me but at times it felt like the performance could have been enhanced by what the Ballroom was partaking in, and it seemed like everything under the sun was involved. The beats were pulsating, the smoke thick, and the hypnotic vocals were putting everybody in the crowd into this hippie dance frenzy. The only thing these kids were missing were some hula hoops.

  1. I was there last night and I agree with everything you said. Cervantes smells awful and the opening act was way too long. Animal Collective was really cool to see, but I would have probably appreciated them more with some sort of catalyst.
