The darlings from Denver played to a sold out house last night full of families filling the Theatre from top to bottom. Fresh off of their crazy selling Soundtrack and Fantastic Covers EP, DeVothKa wowed and oohed. This was my first time experiencing the gypsy sounding rockers and I have to say that I am very foolish for not having them on my radar for these last couple of years while living in Denver. Catch them again tonight at the Ogden.

Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird’s poignant performance last night was one of those shows that you read about in a Spin where they show everybody having a good time and taking in an AMAZING show. He is an amazing string player and a great lyricist. The tempo of the show was flawless and held the attention of the audience for the duration of the show. I have missed him on two occassions and I would not be denied this time. His performance was the perfect compliment as openers for Devotchka. Last night was the first of two shows that are commemorating the New Year.
Best Band I Dismissed In ’06
I saw these kids at a Filter Showcase in Austin this past March and I didn’t think a whole of them. I can say that maybe I was excited for what was going to happen later in that day, perhaps it was the setting (Cedar St), or the timing (later afternoon). Whatever the case may be, I can wholeheartedly say that after looking at other best of lists for the ’06 year, I resent not picking up this album earlier. Shame on me. Some thoughts/words that come to mind when listening to this album, fuzzy, Smashing Pumpkins, lush, and lots of distortion.

VieTnam
I try not to jock albums twice in the same week or month. VieTnam has been occupying my ATTENTION for the last couple of days. Their music is like a time warp to the late 60′s. Some people would see a Bob Dylan voice comparison as negative , but I mean it as one of the most sincere compliments because I cannot stop listening. Rollicking is one word that comes to mind when listening. Their blend of Americana and Rock is what I love most, and their maturization since their departure from Vice has been great, because they are more creative than ever and seem more cohesive.
Blizzard of Oz Pt. II :
The Comeback
The National Weather Service is predicting another 7inches-2ft. of snow in the Denver Metro Area starting this afternoon until Friday evening. Two more snowdays! Well, our streets are not plowed and the snow that is on the streets right now has hardened and turned to ice, making it safe for all commuters around town. Did I mention that there is no trash removal right now too. It’s been kind of hard driving around town lately, but I’m not complaining, it could be worse, we could be under typhoon or tsunami watch. My Winter Watch routine goes into effect after I get off of work in two hours. The routine is as follows: Safeway, Geno’s Liquor , and Blockbuster. Check, check, and check. Read more here

Best Movies of 2006
I waited till last night to make a decision on the best movies that I saw this year. It’s a good thing I did. Pedro Almodovar’s Volver is has breathed new life into Penelope Cruz’s acting career. The movie is shot beautifully and very vibrant full of great shots and vivid colors. The storyline is amazing, the dialogue is hysterical, and all the character’s come to life in this keep it in the family movie. Well deserved of all of the awards that have come or yet to come for this wonderful film. It’s a tie for #2 with the Science of Sleep and Little Miss Sunshine. Both movies were great. One was aesthetically pleasing, while the other was an easy to realte to dysfunctional family that you have met before.
