Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s
@ Larimer Lounge 11-29-06

Last night’s show brought out a lot of the kids from the local bands from Lion Sized, Meese, Bright Channel, and the Hot IQ’s. I counted roughly 7 or 8 people on stage and though they sounded as tight as can be on stage, and well rehearsed, I couldn’t feel them. The show would have been better received had it been in a different venue. Larimer Lounge is more of a rockem sockem type joint, a bit seedy if you will.

Dirty on Purpose @
Larimer Lounge 11/29/06

I think for anybody that was in attendance for last night’s show would agree with me that the climate control inside the Larimer Lounge was just as baumy as it was outside. It felt like 20 degrees inside and my boots were sooooo frigid…. DOP’s performance more than made up for the blistery conditions that the crowd endured. I think the guys in the band had over twenty pedals on stage and the reverb didn’t bother me as much as I thought. I foresee religiously obsessing over their album for the next couple of weeks. Did I mention that the band freaked out on their last jam and nearly busted a couple of amps?

Tommorow Never Knows Fest

This information was just forwarded to me:

Now it its third year, Schubas¹ annual mini-winter-indie-fest, Tomorrow Never Knows, returns in 2007 to its usual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, but with an extended line-up. While this January timeframe may seem odd for a festival, it turns out that many music fans start getting cabin fever around this time and, moreover, they are looking for a shot of quality rock shows, which can sometimes take a hiatus over the holiday and winter months. All three TNKŒ05 shows sold out, and in 2006, the fest branched out to include one more night and more national talent. TNK¹06 bands included Magnolia Electric Co., Tapes Œn Tapes, The Spinto Band, Chin Up Chin UP, and Pit Er Pat.
Tomorrow Never Knows 2007 begins on Wednesday, January 10 and features the Schubas¹ DJs Upstairs series each night, plus family shows on January 13th and 14th. TNK¹07 runs through Sunday, January 14.
Tickets for the daily four band bills and DJs Upstairs are available at schubas.com for $15 per show or $50 for a five show pass and free festival poster. Family show tickets are $8 and also available at schubas.com.

I Don’t Get It

I am pretty good about figuring movies out. The only movies that leave me befuddled are Darren Aronofsky movies. He directed Pi , Requiem for a Dream, and The Fountain. If anyone saw the Fountain, please explain to me what I missed, because, I still don’t get it.

Home, Is Where I Want To Be

I haven’t really visited my hometown of El Paso, TX in quite sometime. Usually when I go, I end up in Mexico and don’t see the light of day. In high school, my Senior Year was full of new friends and new faces. One of those new faces was Leyla. Leyla was this girl that was in my AP Govt/Econonmics class who I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her. I was absolutely worthless in that class because I couldn’t concentrate. Mr. Tweedle (teacher) was this ol’skool hippie cowboy that LOVED Jerry Jeff Walker (think of a Texan cowboy version of Jimmy Buffett) would always embarass me in front of the whole class because of my lack of attention for his material. We became really good friends and we even went to homecoming together. It was kind of ironic because I sat across from my future ex-girlfriend at the dinner table. She’s the kind of friend that would go see a movie on a whim without being told one month in advance. I was dating somebody around Prom time, and at the time, my mother had moved out of state, virtually leaving me very short on funds. I didn’t ask my girl to go to prom because I didn’t have any money. It was either go to Prom or food. So , the obvious choice, I went for the food. Leyla didn’t have a date, so she asked me. I tried to play it cool by graciously declining her offer, but eventually I caved. She offered to pay for everything. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’ have gone to my Senior Prom. It was very innocent and I never thanked her properly. I’m happy she reached out to me recently and I want to dedicate this mix to her. She told me she needed new music and all I know is that her last CD she purchased was the All American Rejects, and her favorite artist of all time is Madonna. Leyla has no clue about off the radar groups. So to the best of my ability , I compiled a list of Leyla-esque tunes from 00-present. This is for you Leyla.

Play Radio Play

Are you one of those people still waiting for the Postal Service that may or may not happen in the not so distant future. Yes, I feel your pain. I’ve been waiting 3 years and change, and still no love, but, on the flipside, we have Stolen Transmission’s latest signee, Play Radio Play. He is 17 yr old Dan Hunter from Aldo, TX and Ultragrrrl has this to say

In 2007 there will be an EP out on ST followed by a full length, but until then you can visit their MySpace and PureVolume, where over 1 million people have been flipping out about PRP.

Mike Shanahan will have 10 days after this Thanksgiving-night game to get Jay Cutler ready to make his NFL debut on the Dec. 3 Sunday night game against Seattle.
