7pm- 7:45pm
Everything Absent or Distorted (A Love Story)
Listen > Still Life with Mac… :: Denver, CO:: (Needlepoint Records)
See them because: “One of the Best Selling CDs in Denver” — Twist and Shout Records ” I was having an awful day…some one said ‘f*ck you’ to me this morning for no reason, my ladyfriend left town for the weekend, I’m broke, and my lunch was terrible…but THEN…I put on Everything Absent or Distorted…and holy crap. My day just flipped around…beautiful, f*ckin a. Just so you know.“ — Music Director, KCWU We contemplated immediate retirement after reading this. To what greater height can a band aspire than to change a life for a day? It’s this way we all should live… Love, Everything Absent or Distorted (A Love Story)
8pm-8:45pm
The Dirty Novels
Listen > Show Me :: Albuquerque, NM :: (independent)
See them because: Welcome to the Glam Side of Life, where music is king, kisses are currency and flirting is mandated by law. This is where The Dirty Novels call home. Here you share the stage with legendery rockers MC5 as well as newer sensations like Von Bondies and Kings of Leon. But you dont stop there. No, far from it. More than just a crush, it’s love at first sight (or listen?). The Dirty Novels bring you hip-shaking, love-making rhythms that can’t be beat.
Dig The Dirty Novels- boleros del amor electrico.
9pm-9:45pm
Conner
Listen > Floating on Error :: Lawrence, KS :: (Sonic Boom)
See them because: Soon they received, justly, comparisons to The Strokes, The Clash and Built to Spill. Their debut album, Hello Graphic Missile (Sonic Boom Recordings) is astounding, a clever but substantial collection of uncommonly catchy songs that displays the capacity of Conner’s fine-tuned rock.
Few bands are this open-eyed to the chance that music can be both strangely tricky and easily remembered. In addition, making any record that sounds different from anything else is a triumph in itself. A triumph of intense, eerie, and compelling songs. Tempting, isn’t it?
10pm-10:45pm
The Thieves (UK)
Listen > You Get it Easy :: Oxford, England :: (Liquor & Poker/Century Media)
See them because: “Formed in Oxford, England, in 1999, and started snatching the British spotlight with their backward-reaching but tuneful rock soon after. Local shows and a self-produced demo prompted the BBC to come calling by the early 2000s” — All Music Guide
“Oxford, England trio the Thieves pickpocket the room with a lethal mix of AC/DC, the Who and the MC5, causing the Holy Moleys to resemble an inflamed mole on the ass cheek of Jello Biafra.” — Las Vegas City Life
11pm-11:45pm
The Hot IQs
Listen > Firecracker :: Denver, CO :: (Morning After/spinART Records)
See them because: Lead singer Eli Mishkin’s haunting voice croons like twice-removed English royalty, only not pretentious. Bryan Feuctinger’s breathy back-up falsettos, too, are soulful coos, loving whispers, patient adornments. Elaine Acosta’s drums snap and ting. She blows bubbles (gum) while playing.
“Tight, bright and more hook-laden than a pirate ship, this attitude-heavy indie trio defies logic with songs that sound both instantly familiar and refreshingly weird. “– John Wenzel, Dever Post
