Uffie =HardCore?!
Uffie is the newest gangster rap pop punk star from Paris via Miami as in Florida. She sounds more like a 18 year old Peaches than Lady Sov. I like her style. It kind of reminds of that one scene from “Coming to America” when those two twins start free stylin and start rappin about “My name is Peahces, and I’m here to say, all the DJ, want to feel my breasts…” yeah, anyway….. She is pretty blatant and I’ve seen pictures of her and Sebastian from DFA 1979. She was discovered when she left Miami when she was 15 and decided to live w/her dad in Paris. Ed Banger discovered her and as they say, the rest is history. Read this short snippet from, and BTW, did I mention she’s kinda hawt?!?
In a more explicit extension of this trans-genre breeding, Ed Banger may have found pop promise in their latest signee, 18-year-old cutesy rapper Uffie. Raised in Miami (with a brief stint in Hong Kong) as Anna Catherine Hartley, she was 15 when she came to visit her father in Paris and decided to stay. Eventually she began dating DJ and musician Feadz, who shared her love of crunk and other regional mutations of southern hip-hop. Earlier this year they recorded “Pop The Glock”Âa lyrical riff on Audio Two’s “Top Billin” done in a fake English accentÂand posted it on her MySpace page, where it quickly became a download sensation. Uffie has since released her Mr Oizo-produced anthem “Ready To Uff,” cultivating a sound of Euro bubblegum booty bass that is heavy on tough talk but light on actual threat. Predictably, suitors from Steve Aoki to Pharrell Williams have expressed interest. Though she was already friendly with Winter when she joined the label, Uffie admits she’s surprised how quickly the Ed Banger family accepted her. “First I felt kind of weird, because I was like, I just made a stupid track, I don’t know if I belong in the artist community,” she says. “But everyone is really encouraging.” As a sign of just how fresh from the oven her career is, when Uffie learned the day before her gig at the Elysée Montmartre that she was scheduled for 35 minutes instead of her usual 20, there was a brief crisis where she and Feadz considered recording three new songs that night, just so they’d have enough material to play. Following Winter’s advice, they stuck with their usual set and Uffie came to the stage in high-tops and a black baby doll dress with gray spandex underneath. Though she couldn’t quite pull off the sass that a transcript of her banter would suggest, when she asked the crowd if they were “ready to fuck,” she got all the screams you’d expect.

Kings of Leon / the Stills on tour….These two bands were my favorite bands a couple of years ago and who have thought that they would end up touring together. The Stills sans lead singer have evolved into this kind of bluesy rock band and my favorite Pentecostals , the Kings of Leon, are still rockin and it will be nice to see them in a small venue, the Gothic. Last time I saw them was when they opened up for U2 and not a whole lot of people were really into the show.

Juana Molina , Argentinian songstress/comedian, will be making her Denver debut Oct.17 at the Walnut Room, alongside Adem. I am very excited about this one. I was very fortunate to have caught her on tour w/Jose Gonzalez in LA a couple of months ago, and I almost felt that she stole the show away from him. So that got me thinking, White Whale, huh….I did some research and was pleasantly surprised. White Whale is the newest group on Merge Records and released their new album WWI and will be touring in support of their album. No fancy descriptions here, just happy rock n roll that doesn’t give away it’s influences. It’s hard to pinpoint them due to their chameleon like adaptation on every song, which is great, nobody wants anything that is going to be boring and predictable. Writers side note (I’m not a huge fan of the art work for their new record and their name, although, I firmly believe that their music can stand on it’s own merits without the kewl band name or kewl artwork, for confirmation see, Mew, and the Mars Volta)
What if I were to tell you….that some of the best dance music was coming from south of the border, namely Mexico, and no, I’m not talking about cumbias, or any other Mexican polka sounding music either. Think about it, you have Nortec Collective, Kinky, and Instituto Mexicano Del Sonido. I was in Mexico City a couple of weeks ago and I was hipped to these guys, Sussie 4, and they are from Guadalajara Mexico…. On their bio they describe their sound as, “French house, that elegantly fuses Latin rhthyms with jazz and pop, and avant gard tendencies.” You can’t pinpoint their sound, it’s everywhere, and some of other descriptions from their bio, “Acid Cabaret, Paris, Cuba, ane Electro Song.” Whatever it is, I’m buying into it and they just released an album , “Red Album ” in July.

Wolf Parade @ the Fox Theatre in Boulder
Wolf Pardade played last night at the Fox Theatre to a sold out crowd that was insane. I was unable to walk anywhere and almost passed out literally. I have never been to a show and almost blacked out. It was kind of scary, but I managed. I hung out toward the back and my “awesome” camera got some decent pics. I am happy to report that Wolf Parade live is very improvisational live and had a very triumphant night. What caught my eye the most was the drummer. He bashed those things all night. His arms had to have hurt… Frog Eyes opened and I was able to catch the tail end of that set.

I fulfilled my civic duty yesterday by going to jury duty. I am convinced that going to jury duty will be much like a line in hell, atleast I can only imagine so. Everybody is there because they have to, and nobody looks happy. Everybody looks so disgruntled and there is a full room of anxious people awaiting their destiny. The local court system really pushes the fact that we are lucky for having this system and not to look at it as if were some type of inconvenience. Lucky for me, I was dismissed, but not before hanging out in a court room for 6 hours. I am not complaining, the case I was being probed for was a civil one that was going to last 9 days…. Thank GOD!!! I wasn’t selected.
This actually exists…I haven’t had a whole lot of time to watch any television, but my roomate says that I may suffer from this, and I do too. It’s RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) and it seems to affect a ton of Americans that sit at work all day. This is legitimate and I thought it was going to be a Saturday Night Live skit w/Horatio Sanz…. hahaha, do the pharmeuctical companies not make enough with what’s out there already!?!?! I hope crazy eye syndrome is next!!
