Movie Review –
A Scanner Darkly
Wow, so this is a first. Keanu Reeves played his character as himself. Crazy, right? Think about it. The only movie he was ever out of character was in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. All his other movies are himself which is like this hybrid Spicoli-hippie type character This is the second movie in which he co-stars w/Winona Ryder. I think he has a thing where he likes to reunite w/past female lead actresses because the same has happened numerous of times w/Sandra Bullock. The movie is solid. Great film adaptation from the book and the music is genius. They used material from Thom Yorke’s solo release that was just released this week. Truth be told, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey, Jr. steal the show. Downey plays a prodigy gone wrong that is addicted to this fictitious drug “D.” Totally out of character for him. Same w/Woody Harrelson, he plays this tweeked out addict w/tons of great lines. The two definitely make up the better part of the comic relief. As for the rest of the movie, it is pure eye candy and just a great story altogether. Richard Linklater has proven once again that originality can pay huge dividends.
