Gnarls Barkley – St Elsewhere Mixtape
This is an hour mixtape of some ill remixes of Gnarls mixed w/some other goodness. The dub was sent to me by the magazine I work for and mixed by DJ Felli Fez. Should make for some good weekend party music. Crazy thing is that people are telling me that they are playing Gnarls on the radio stations in town. Something I didn’t think would happen.

In what has been a Summer influenced by dancehall music/reggaeton/ and reggae comes the new release from up and comer Elan. Elan has been fronting the Wailers as Bob’s voice and has suprisingly enough done a great job on cover duties. He is following a path similar to that of Matisyahu and is coming out with his full length released earlier this month. Several big names have lent their lyrical talents, Gwen Stefani, Assasin, and Cutty Ranks. To me reggae is always a good soundtrack for the summer.

Biography
by Marisa Brown
Reggae singer Elan Atias, who as a solo performer goes by his first name, was born in Los Angeles to an Israeli/Moroccan father and Jewish Native American mother. After a record executive told Elan — who was not yet 20 at the time — that he’d like to hear more of his music, the singer found a nearby studio where he could record some material. Looking to complete his band, he learned that Wailers guitarist Al Anderson lived close by. Anderson was impressed by the similarity between Elan’s and Bob Marley‘s voices, and eventually recruited the Los Angelean to replace Junior Marvin as the Wailers‘ lead singer. Elan stayed with the group from 1997 to 1999, after which he decided to pursue his own solo career, recording an album with Sire-London that was never released. However, the sessions did create “Dreams Come True,” which was included on 2000′s Sex and the City soundtrack, and in 2003 a cover of Roxy Music‘s “Slave to Love” appeared on the soundtrack to the film 50 First Dates. That same year Elan and friend and producer Tony Kanal (of No Doubt) started writing and recording songs. Kanal took the finished product to Interscope, which signed Elan and released his debut album, Together as One, in 2006
Somehow this gem was lost in the shuffle of all the great releases that have come out within the last couple of months, but I thought it deserved a second listen…and I realized that I may have been listening with the wrong ears because it turns out that Neil Young is not going to “burn out or fade away” and he is not going down without a fight. The title speaks for itself and why is a Canadian coming out with a CD like this? (waiting for response from the “Boss”)
I just got this in the mail the other day. They are B sides and rarites from Editor’s Back Room album. The last song “Munich” remix is insane, very dancy and upbeat….
I had been counting down the days to last night. I was fortunate enough to go to the Radiohead show last night as my last birthday gift. It was amazing, although, I will say that I think it’s cool that Radiohead has new fans, but they seem a lot angrier and young. I found myself at one point worried that they would trample me while stuck in the middle of the crowd because the show was GA. Everybody is manning up for space and nobody is willing to give any to anybody. That and why do their shirts always have to break the bank, fo reals!!! $30 for a tshirt?? geez!!
Deerhoof sound better live than on CD. I really enjoyed their set and played to an almost full show. They rawk purdy hard and I wish they would have played a bit longer.

I made it back from my 72 hour vacation extravaganza and lived to tell the tale. I feel fatigued and happy to be back home. On my excursion to San Diego, we ventured down to Tijuana. Tijuana is probably the nicest bordertown these ol’ eyes have set sight on all time. It was cleaner and seemed well organized to its sister cities. There’s a lot of strip clubs here and I’m willing to bet that the stip club to Tijuana citizen ratio maybe 5 to 1….really!!!
Good thing we walked back over the bridge.
I thought that this was a cool street sign that warranted some type of recognition.
The Arch from St. Louis is finally found in Tijuana!!!
A kewl shot from inside the Custom’s building on the way over to San Diego.

I can’t say how nervous I am right now. It is 8am in San Diego and I have a belly full of butterflies. But in a good way. We are going to Tijuana , the beach, and our final destination is downtown to make it in time for the show. I found an oldie but a goody song from Pablo Honey that I doubt they will play, but you never know. It’s a live version of “Blowout” which is one of my favorite cuts off of Pablo Honey. I will try to get some decent pics, but my chances are pretty slim considering that I read that people are waiting in line as we speak. Until later….
I leave for San Dee-ago today, I believe it means whale’s vagina, but I could be wrong, agree to disagree. I missed my flight this morning, but intentionally. I plan on catching a later flight by flying stand-by. I couldn’t be more excited because this is the finale for my birthday, so it better rock. Radiohead is tommorow night and I’m kind of nervous. Nervous because the venue is GA and I hope I can bum rush the stage. I totally forgot about these great songs about California. And by the way, Tuesday my flight is scheduled to leave San Diego in the evening, and it looks like I will have to take the early flight home from San Diego. Cheers!!

I don’t think I could have planned it any better. My birthday this year has been blessed with lots of great musical acts. Last night was part 2 of a 3 part series. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin opened up and to my suprise they were very Weezer sounding but old skool Weezer. They were a bit quirky but strong opener nonetheless. I had no frame of refrence and was a little skeptical, but they were a pleasant suprise. Sound Team invaded the small stage w/their giant entourage and blew the roof off of Hi-Dive. The stage barely fit the crew and had a/v problems but still managed to overcome the technical difficulties and passed with flying colors. They didn’t lose their cool, but still rolled with the music. I have seen many times when a musical act loses their composure and storms off stage leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of the audience, but not this time, Sound Team kicked our ass. They were brilliant and my only qualm was that they didn’t play “Afterglow Years” but you can’t win them all.

Yesterday was my birthday and took the day off. I started the day off in perfect fashion by dropping my pants and bending over, because the GMAT gave it to me. It was incredibly difficult and very tidious. So goes, but the day was not a total waste. I went to dinner at Buca Di Bepo, which was amazing, and proceeded to go to Vinyl where we got a table to see the last date on Sasha’s Fundacion tour. His set this time around was a little more calculated and had an amazing energy that had the dance floor rocking all night long.
