Finally getting around to some new music….

I have finally gotten around to getting some new music, and first and foremost, I really believe that the new Yeah Yeah Yeah’s album probably deserved lower than the 6.8 it received on Pitchfork, they were very lenient with them, I didn’t care all too much for the album…just a repeat of “Fever to Tell” and nothing new or it seems as if their sound hasn’t progressed….so is life, and I also just got —

Love is All–Think of Siouxsie and the Banshees on speed….
Tapes ‘n Tapes—Pavement never broke up, they just regrouped and relocated to Minneapolis
Elefant-Kind of the same issue w/the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, their new material sounds the same, but catchy nonetheless
Drive By Truckers-Gangstabilly never sounded so good!
Josh Rouse-good chillen Sunday music when you can’t fathom having another drink…
Band of Horses=My Morning Jacket

and I forgot to pick up the new T.I. and People in Planes, should be EXCELLENT…

On a movie note, I caught the new offering in Mexican Cinema, and I guess I should preface this, but I love Mexican Cinema, and this movie “Duck Season” or in Spanish “Temporada de Patos” was another coming of age movie, but the difference was that this movie , aside from not having any plot, showed what it is like to be a teenager in today’s times….the two main characters have a penchant for vids, and dedicate most of their time to playing Halo on Xbox…but one of the kids confesses to the female love interest about his curiosity in his best friend , but one of the only movies I have ever seen to ever tackle such a risque/taboo subject…

Friday night sounds good to me….

The Rakes @ Urban Outfitters

Last of the SXSW Posts…I promise

ugh, it has taken me this long to recuperate from the mayhem that was known as SXSW, but I am in one piece, and I think I may have a functional computer to work with… but here goes, they are just going to be out of order, some in order, and other photos completely missing because I forgot my camera on Saturday, and by that point, I was already in the “eh, is this shit over with” mode…. I left off on the transition to the Insound shindig that took forever to get into, the only day party where we waited, and it was well worth the wait…we saw Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and scored free booze…we rushed that night and went to Changos for dinner, and hit up the Kemado Records Showcase where we caught Dungen=shite, the Fever were alright, Elefant ruled, and we split the Sword and caught Tapes N’ Tapes finally, not before almost being pummeled by some belligerent drunks at Latitude 30 , overall a very productive day. Saturday was fairly tame, we hit up the Rakes at Urban which was awesome, caught Nine Black Alps and Snow Patrol at the Filter party at Cedar St…beautiful place, love the little courtyard…Saturday night was the end of our road, we caught Forward Russia! fucking awesome, those guys are kind of like the Rapture/Icarus Line, soooo good, only to be WAMMMOED into some shite at Zona Rosa to see the Stills and Tower of London, which both were awful, I really felt my life coming down to a halt at that moment…after the excrutiating pain we jetted back to Fox and the Hound to catch She Wants Revenge, and talk about no personality, those guys have zilch, you are better off just listening to their CD, and we had to beat it, the soles of my shoes went on strike and we couldn’t stick around for We are Scientists…The next day we met up w/one of my old friends from high school, Jessica Becker….I luv this girl, she is probably one of the coolest girls I know and she reminded me of that, even though we only hung for an hour, but after that we saw that new movie w/Amanda Bynes, “She’s the Man” based on that old 80′s movie “Just One of the Guys” that is based on a Shakespearean play “Midsummer’s Night Dream”and it provided some much needed slapstick comedy, something very silly because by this point I could no longer focus on a coffee cup if I wanted to…but I am home in sweet Denver alas and ready for the Weekend…

Stormy SXSW Saturday

Good thing I brought my umbrella, cuz it’s a stormin’ round these parts… ughh, my body can no longer function on bbq, tex mex and cerveza….my body is full on rejecting anything of that nature today, I haven’t tried yet, but I know…..Yesterday was probably one of our more productive days, we got an early start at the Pitchfork / Emo’s annex tent to catch Jose Gonzalez, which I’m thoroughly convinced that if Wes Anderson ever made a serious attempt at making a serious/drama type movie, Jose Gonzalez would be the person that would score that movie. His music is very subtle and moving, and I have this cover of him doing Kylie Mingoue’s “Hand on your heart” that I swear had me crying immediately….

Jose Gonzalez

After Jose Gonzalez our tanks were empty, we went up the street to Stubb’s BBQ, and for anybody that doesn’t know me that well, at my house you will onlly find Stubb’s BBQ sauce, I am convinced that this is God’s gift to man….”oh so yummy”(to be read in your best Cartman voice)!!!!!!! I ordered the Stubb’s major, which consists of 3 meats and 3 sides, for man should not live on 2 meats and 2 sides as noted by the Stubb’s minor…I ordered ribs, brisket, and a hot link, sides I ordered beans, spinach, and mashed potatoes… I was satisfied with the meal, but after eating at Rudy’s the other day, damn, Rudy’s is I afraid to say, better….who knows, maybe it’s the dimensia talking, sleep depravation amongst other things…. but after the meal, we hit up the Pitchfork tent again to catch one of the more exciting offering from DFA (which stands for Death from above) records, which is home to LCD Soundsystem, and all those crazy dance punk kids, but we caught the Juan Maclean, he seemed disgruntled because his records kept on jumping all over the place, which coincdentally reminded me of that scene in “House Party” when Martin Lawrence is spinning and this guy bustin his sweet moves keeps on hitting the table where he is spinning and the dude that hit his turntables told him he was doing him a favor….anybody that knows, when your tables get bumped or even worse, have a “train wreck” which is defined in the urban dictionary as– when homeboy the newb DJ trys to mix some beats together and it sounds like shoes in the dryer. its painfull. it really is. but I can’t get the stupid photos to upload, so I must bid adieu w/more pics and more incessant rambling…

SXSW Day ?/!@#

Yesterday was a sham of sorts, we kind of were slow to wake, and ended up having Rudy’s BBQ, so good, my only qualm was the ribs didn’t have enough meat, but they were soooo good….We wanted to make it to Red 7 for Tapes’N Tapes and we caught the last 2 seconds of their set, I don’t feel bad because when we left, lots of people had the same schedule as us and were duped as well….I met this guy from the UK group the Capes there, and he was pretty nice and in good spirits, it was funny because I asked him who was on after TapesN Tapes, and he casually said, “oh yeah, we’re next, we’re the Capes,” but really nice about it…..We proceeded to Stubbs where we missed yet another show because we wanted to catch the tail end of the Wu-Tang set, and came only to hear Ghostface Killah say , “Peace,” wow, so at this point we were 0-2, so we needed to stay positive, we ended up at Emo’s and caught The Most Serene Republic, the latest offering from Arts and Crafts label in Canada, and to be honest, I have yet to hear a shitty band on that label, seriously….They were playing Emo’s inside, we caught their set and right after they played, Black Heart Procession went on like a gypsy dancing near a campfire, that’s what they sounded like, I really remember them being a little harder, but good, nonetheless….

The Most Serene Republic

Night Time at the Diesel Party

Film School

Editors

We decided to go to an invite party last night presented by Diesel, only to encounter a slew of hipsters/scenesters that really don’t care about the music that is played. I was excited to catch Film School, they just had their van and gear stolen in New Jersey a couple of weeks ago, but they were short pressed for time, they only played for 20 mins or so, they had to jet to another showcase, but the short time they did play really won me over…..The Spinto Band was no bargain, and that was pretty disheartening because I had read so much positive press, same w/Boy Least Likely To, kind of pinned my ass into boredom submission….We caught Voxtrot yet again, and as much as I want to like them, they just kind of died by the wayside….Editors finally went on like the crack of a whip and just stormed the stage like some Mongolian Warfeast….we were star struck, they played well, and ended the set w/plenty of fury….

SXSW Day 2 (but really a recap of day 1)

Sound Team

yesterday was filled with lots of overcast skies, more lone star, and more taco cabana, i can’t enough of that shit…seriously….but we made it in time for the day parties on 6th, which started w/Zykos, not too memorable, but Sound Team which is one of the main bands I came to see looked like some high school rock band, but sooo good, I guess it’s been an ongoing trend, but most new bands are trying to emulate this manic david byrne energy from his days w/the talking heads, great sound nonetheless , very good….

The Octopus Project

After Sound Team, we kind of mosied our way to the Red Eyed Fly, we caught the Octopus Project, which was pretty surreal, they we’re very loud, and quiet at the same time, no vocals, just pretty noise….

I love you but i’ve chosen darkness

Late night , we saw Voxtrot cheesy poppy and kind of like ben folds rock…Serena manesh pitchfork darlings that forgot to show up a rock, of montreal was like watching captain fantastic elton john, very boisterous and curious, but great, and another local talent and you will know us by the trail of dead were like this white stripes lyric that kind of goes like “if you can hear a piano fall you can hear me coming down the hall” which was very fascinating, note to self, purchase all their catalog, ep’s included….

This is another reason I’m in Austin, more homegrown talent, I love you but ive chosen darkness, they have this delicate sinister quality that comes across in their hooks and chops…WOW!!!

More items I have learned while on this trip….

a) my camera sucks in the dark, or maybe i do and i haven’t figured how it works

b)taco cabana rulz

c)why do women have to have clear purses w/pictures of their kids or husbands, seriously, i could really go without having to see them, ughh…..i’ve seen 7 women w/this purse, FAUX PAS….
